Stealing a day on Ben nevis

February 08, 2012 at 7:29 PM

On Ben nevis with Andy and Neil. It was a birthday present of a days guiding for Andy. They wanted something big and classic. Point 5 was a no go due to Ben Nevis having her usual spindrift tantrum on a windy day. We thought about Orion which would have been fine, but perhaps a bit long for a wild day. In the end we opted for Hadrians. A good choice as usually the spindrift is more of a pain than a hazard as the bowl that feeds it is not too big.

In general the Ben is looking good with fat ice high up on all the routes. The Curtain would go with a thin run out first pitch. Compression cracks are thin but fine and waterfall gully is ok also.

Am going to head into Meggy tomorrow on a bit of gamble. We are going to have a look at Smith's gully. Will let you know how we get on.
