Creag Meagaidh, Soggy pumpkins and White rainbows!

February 09, 2012 at 6:40 PM

Into Creag Meagaidh today to see what was in. Super misty in the corrie but we did get glimpses of the post face. Last post looked thin but do-able, piccy below. There did appear to be a lot of soft looking snow on the upper part of the route where the final ice pitch usually is. We got a glimpse of Smith's on the walkout as well. Again, thin but do-able at the bottom but a lot of soft snow high up. We opted for the pumpkin as it was a wee bit higher and we could see it better! The route was fine if a little drippy. We topped out onto a beautiful sunny plateau and not a breath of wind. Some strange white rainbows with the amount of moisture in the air.

The crag could do with a good re-freeze, or even better a quick wet storm and then a re-freeze. Buttresses were generally black but the turf was frozen.

Back on the Ben tomorrow to seek a short quality high ice route. (Not Smith's!)
