Winter Mountaineering, Ben nevis in June.
Jun 01, 2015
Winter mountaineering on Ben Nevis with Paul on the weekend in preparation for his attempt on Mont Blanc. Amazing conditions for this time of year but it would be good now if summer came so we could get on with rock climbing and scrambling. We went up No3 Gully and came down ledge route. Soft snow but full on winter under foot. Plenty of skiers out enjoying the conditions which are perfect for skiing.
Fresh ice had been forming high up and smiths and indicator wall and good friday climb still looked ok. There is a possibility that you might be able to ice climb on Ben Nevis on mid summers day! Tower ridge in full on soft snow wither conditions at the moment.
Axe and crampons required from the Boulder upwards.
Skiers skinning up Corrie na Ciste.
The same skiers tucked in under the still big cornices on No4 Gully.
At the top of No 3 gully.
Fresh rime ice on the plateau.
Looking across to Glovers chimney and upper Tower Ridge.
On the descent of Ledge Route. A perfect snow crest.
