Mountain Motion winter conditions and blog

Hadrians wall, Ben nevis

February 18, 2012 at 6:17 PM

Took Peter and Sean up Hadrians Wall today. Ice was a little cruddy in places and could do with a quick thaw and then re-freeze. There is very good ice two - three inches down so protection was good. Quiet on the hill as most folk put off by weather forecasts and pessimistic gossip.

Plenty of cover in Zero and Point 5 but is probably slightly cruddy as was Hadrians. Orion was the initial aim but bottom two pitches are very thin and it did not look like the second pitch was there. Rubicon wall needs a bit more rime and ice in the bottom pitch, Observatory buttress looked thin also. Tower Scoop and Smiths looked great and the Ciste ice lines are hanging in.

Am off to the Hut tomorrow for a few days so will blog and update when I get back. Am climbing with my sponsors, Outdoor Research, Scarpa and Mountain Boot Co.
