Exploring the upper gorge, Rjukan.
Jan 08, 2015
Into the upper gorge area in Rjukan today for a look and to practice some multi pitch ice climbing. We climbed Nedre Svingfoss which was a lovely long pitch of ice on the right of some flowing water. We then had a wander up the gorge to look at conditions. Ian then led Lettvan, three pitches of ice, looking at belays and stance management as well as multi pitch abseilling from abolokov's.
In terms of climbable routes, Nye Vemorkfoss was ok. (We are going to have a go at Bakveien tomorrow which looks thin/mixed through the narrow, but do-able). Sabortofossen was thin but complete and looked fairly friendly on the final steep pitch. Jusoyla looked ok and Trapfoss looked fine. Juldagsfossen looked a bit too thin on the upper slab but might go?
Fiona seconding Ian's first pitch.
Practicing stance management with three people.
