A climb in a very snowy upper gorge, Rjukan.

Jan 13, 2015

A very snowy ice climb on Bakveien today followed by a look at Vemorkbrufoss Ost. The odd small sluff avalanches made the start of the day interesting and after a swim up the final pitch we abseilled back down the route. The intent was then to have a look at the Ost route at the bridge. After trying to wade through snowy boulders to get to the bottom of it we gave up and went round the top to ab in. The bottom of the route looks ok but we found that the top of the route was very thin so we sacked the idea.

A good foot and a half of snow has fallen in the past 24 hours banking out easy routes and making access a bit tricky to all but the quick access cragging areas. However, tomorrow looks to be a good day so the plan is to try and get onto Trapfoss which looks quite good, if a bit snowy on the final pitch.
